At BYU Education Week in August, Elder David A. Bednar challenged us to flood the earth with gospel messages.
In response to that challenge, Jillian J. Farnsworth created a Facebook Event I’M A MORMON Profile Picture Week.
The event encourages Latter-day Saints to change their Facebook profile picture to an image that states, “I’m a Mormon.” Jillian has created images that you can use in about 40 languages.
The week-long event is from October 6–12, the week after General Conference and the same week the movie Meet the Mormons is released to theaters. If you want to participate, click Going on the Facebook event page.
The goal is to have 250,000 members of the Church change their profile picture to an “I’m a Mormon” picture so that friends who are not of our faith will discover that they know a Mormon, hopefully leading to sincere questions and gospel-related conversations.
You can do it in 3 easy steps:
- Change your profile picture to one of the “I’m a Mormon” photos (posted on the event page).
- In the picture description, mention the full name of the Church and say something positive. Also use related hashtags. For example, “I’m a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and I love it! #ImAMormon #ShareGoodness #MeetTheMormons.”
- Remember Elder Bednar’s suggestions to be authentic and consistent, edify and uplift, respect intellectual property, and be wise and vigilant.
Thanks for providing images to use on Facebook. Just wanted to note that “Latter-day” is hyphenated in the name of the church. Small detail, but thought you might want to update the image :).
If my friends don’t know why Mormon by now shouting out them isn’t going to do any good.
Most of the images in the original post were from other people. I’ve corrected the spelling of the name of the church, which is “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”

Call me cynical but I REALLY don’t see any purpose in this! How is simply telling people that you’re Mormon mean that you’re spreading the gospel? Instead, share uplifting thoughts, videos, music, quotes from conference etc. I can imagine a lot of non-members seeing this profile picture trend as a somewhat pathetic cry for attention.
Well, when we don’t understand things, we tend to ask questions about it or we just leave it alone. Simple as that.
Simple acts like these help open the doors for one to share the gospel. 😉 It doesn’t actually share the gospel but it will help open the doors of opportunity to share. 🙂
Yeah, all of your friends will SEE your profile picture, but chances are that it will annoy many of your non-member friends. Seriously, search the keywords ‘Mormon profile picture’ on twitter and you’ll see what the general reaction of non-members is. It’s annoying and pissing lots of people off. I see that as the opposite of sharing the goodness of the gospel.
Most people I know are too busy to watch a video or listen to uplifting music I may share. However, everyone, almost EVERYONE, is on some sort of social media and seeing the picture can trigger something.
No pathetic attention for anyone involved.

I’m a Mormon 😉
I’m an LDS
With all due respect, why not put an “IMLDSRU” bumper sticker on the back of your car or an “LDS” decal on your rear windshield to do missionary work.
Oh yeah, that’s been done already and no one was stopped in traffic to be asked about the Church. This is yet another effort to get members to do missionary work which members apparently don’t like doing.
