See updated information in the article “LDS Recreation Camp Website.”
Camping.ChurchofJesusChrist.org is a new Church website that provides information about many of the recreational properties owned or managed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Recreational properties are camp facilities developed for use by youth and families of the Church. For example, these recreational properties provide a location for holding Young Women camp programs. They also provide a setting where youth and families can enjoy outdoor experiences together.
I kind of expected there to be a little more content, such as a directory or list of properties. I’m sure this site is good for SEO, but I’m not sure when I would ever refer someone to its content.
Jacob, the design of the site was intentional. You need to know about a property and search for it, then you can see information about how to schedule it. So, for example, if you know about the Heber Valley Camp, you can search for it and find information about scheduling it. They didn’t want to provide an open list of camps or schedules because there are people who may inappropriately target young women during camps.
It would be nice if those of us who are new to the church and camps could see more photos, videos of the camps. We are given a small dim map of the grounds, but I would like to have a real good idea what where the camp site is that I’ll be staying at, what the area is like, so I can know what I need to bring and what I can glean from the area for certification activities, etc. Some of us are very low income and can’t just go drive up to the camp to scout it out. If we could see more online and read more about what people do at a YW camp and get a feel for the place, it would be much easier packing and preparing.
That makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.
Interestingly, I saw the search box in the middle, but for some reason, I only read the text in the box, “Search” and thought it was a site search not a property search (although on second examination, it clearly says so in the label to the left). I would suggest combining the in-box label and the label to the left of the search box.
Also, if I perform a empty search (select the search box and press enter), then I get an open list of camps which you say you are trying to avoid.
I’d like to be able to search properties based on geographic location and amenities. For example, I’d like to know if there are any properties within 50 miles that have cabins.
Could you please change the finalize and pay part of your website to two separate buttons; 1. Pay, 2. Finalize. The way you have it now is confusing
