The Church will publish an updated general handbook in February and make it available to all members and leaders. Today’s Church announcement explains that the new handbook will be simplified in its tone and approach.

Details

  • The new handbook will be titled General Handbook: Serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  • This digital-only handbook will be published in English on February 19, 2020. (51 additional languages will be published in the coming months.)
  • Nearly 80% of the content will be transferred from the current Handbook 1 and Handbook 2 and reordered in a new order.
  • Of the total 38 chapters, 9 chapters have already been rewritten into the simplified format. The remaining 29 chapters will be rewritten and published as they are completed during 2020 and 2021.
  • The new handbook will be updated regularly, providing quicker updates as Church programs or procedures change.

Background

Previously, Handbook 1 was published for stake presidencies and bishoprics and Handbook 2 was for all other leaders. Now, the combined handbook will be available to all leaders, members, and the public.

“This new handbook is a part of the ongoing Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ that began 200 years ago,” said Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, who helped introduce the new handbook to General Authorities and General Officers this morning. “This Restoration has been and will continue to be a process of learning how to minister as Jesus would to a richly diverse world. We pray this new handbook will help Church leaders use their God-given gifts to continue to bless lives in their ministry. We know there is room in this Church for everyone.”
