The world’s largest genealogy organization is redesigning FamilySearch.org so it can store and provide records of same-sex families, according to the statement “Recording data on same-sex relationships” posted online yesterday.
The goal of FamilySearch.org is to capture, store, and provide records and an accurate genealogy that represents past, present, and future families of the world. To support this goal, same-sex relationships, including same-sex parents and same-sex couples, will be provided in FamilySearch Family Tree. Several systems that surround Family Tree, such as tree and record searching, must be significantly redesigned to support same-sex relationships before Family Tree can release this capability. We expect to finish this work by 2019. Following this work, the FamilySearch Family Tree application can then allow same-sex information to be recorded. We appreciate your patience and desire to preserve the world’s genealogy in Family Tree.
Do the church recognized same sex marriage?why are we going to include in the genealogy for there is no growth in same sex marriage is dead.imagine the world with only same sex marriage the world will never grow
Although same-sex marriage is not doctrine of the Church, FamilySearch wants to maintain an accurate genealogy in its FamilyTree.
Hi Glicel – Same sex reltionships can and do grow! One of my daughters is in a same sex marriage (yes that can be and is a legal form of marriage in the UK). She and her female partner have two children who were conceived by using a sperm donor. This is a valid relationship, just as it would be in a M/F parnership where for reasons of male infertility, a sperm doner has been used. I have no doubt that there are also a very large number of children whose biological father is not the father married to their mother. I will leave the reasons for that scenarios to your imagination! It alo needs to be said, that Family Search are well behind most other Computer Software and online genialogy services providers in recognising this possibility. Others have allowed this possibilty for many years.
I hope that President Nelson or other members of the First Presidency, or from the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles have received revelation into this. I personally cannot believe that the Lord would condone such activity.
In the book of Leviticus found in verse 20:13, it reads “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.” If Jehovah spoke to Moses so absolutely in this book of the law, then why should it be any different today except through repentance and a change of heart? Obviously, Jehovah was serious about this.
Do you really think in the millennium or post millennium that the Savior will recognize same-sex marriages as a legitimate pairing and family sealings as legitimate? I really can’t think so. Isn’t this really a tactic of the adversary to defeat legitimate family bonds and sealings?
Gary,
The Church isn’t condoning same-sex marriages. It simply wants to create records for all individuals. Right, now if you have a family headed by two men or two women, there is no way to enter those people into FamilySearch and no way for temple work to get done for them.
The First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve considered this carefully before approving it.
I am appalled by the amount of negativity this is getting . Good job , Family Tree! It is 2018. We need to do away with hating same sex relationships and realize the most fundamental thing in this universe is love . You cannot change who you love . God would not condemn a man or women for loving the same sex because it’s possible HE made them that way .
Thankyou! He made my daughter that way. LDS are not about love or family. My family is in the church and do not practice what they preach, like forgiveness, they turn their back on family.
Good grief! The FS database describes what people do, not whether or not it is believed to be morale. There are plenty of instances in the database of children born to people who were “living in sin,” just for the night or for years. Shall we exclude their histories from the database?
