Christmas

The Light the World Christmas celebration encourages us to follow the example of the Savior. Each day in December, Mormon.org will feature one of the Savior’s teachings along with ideas to help you put that teaching into practice. The service that you do can bring light to those around you and to your ancestors.

Below are ideas on how family history work can be a part of your service during the Light the World celebration in December.

  • December 1: “Freely ye have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8). Consider indexing a batch of family history records to help others in their search for historic records about their ancestors. Records are available online because others took the time to index them.
  • December 3: “Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days” (Matthew 12:12). Family history activities can invite the Spirit into your home each Sunday. Choose one simple family history activity to do on Sunday, December 3.
  • December 5: “Honour thy father and mother” (Matthew 15:4). The best ways to honor the memory of your parents and ancestors is to tell their stories. Upload photos or stories to your Memories gallery on FamilySearch.
  • December 17: “Ye shall meet together oft” (3 Nephi 18:22). Family gatherings strengthen our shared ties as we meet with loved ones and create special memories together.  Visit or call a family member. Gather your family together for a Sunday meal. Make plans for a future family reunion or gathering.
  • December 20: “A man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth” (Luke 12:15). Act today to share your most significant life experiences with your family and preserve them for future generations. Document your life in a journal, through photos, or with voice recordings. See #52Stories for prompts and ideas to help you get started.

This is just a summary of ideas. See more details about each of these ideas in the article “5 Ways to Light the World with Family History.”
