“Religious freedom is more than just the freedom to believe what you want. It’s also the freedom to talk about and act on your core beliefs without interference from government or others, except when necessary to protect health and safety. It also allows people with similar beliefs to form religious organizations that govern their own affairs.” That’s one of the clear messages from the Church new Religious Freedom website (ReligiousFreedom.lds.org).

The website explains 4 cornerstones of religious freedom that we must protect:

  1. Freedom to believe. No one should be criticized, persecuted, or attacked by individuals or governments for what he or she believes about God.
  2. Freedom to share our faith and our beliefs with others. We rely on religious freedom in order to teach the Lord’s doctrine in our families and throughout the world.
  3. Freedom to form a religious organization, a church, to worship peacefully with others. The eleventh article of faith declares, “We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.”
  4. Freedom to live our faith. Free exercise of faith not just in the home and chapel but also in public places.

The new website provides ideas on how to do the following:

  • Become informed about the basics of religious freedom and understand your rights.
  • Live and respectfully share your beliefs.
  • Find simple ways to help protect the rights of everyone to act on their beliefs.
  • Build trusted relationships in your community among people of diverse opinions.

I invite you to visit the Religious Freedom website to explore further.
